Sexuality Issues

There are many misconceptions surrounding issues around sexuality of transsexual individuals. Simply put, gender identity is not about sex, either biological sex (as in physical organs) or sexual preference and arousal.

Transsexuals enjoy a whole range of different sexual preferences and sexual attractions, just as any other person. Therefore transsexuals can be heterosexual, bisexual or homosexual. The same mechanisms for sexual preference operate as in the general population and include a number of genetic factors as well as early life experiences. Therefore it should never be assumed that a transsexual is of one particular sexual orientation or another.

Although gender identity and sexual identitiy are two separate concepts, it is often helpful to understand more about sexual feelings when trying to get a better understanding of the gender identity itself.

During the psychiatric assessment, it is common for the clinician to ask questions about this. There is no right or wrong answer and it depends entirely on personal choice, but it helps inform professionals about the stability of the gender identity and how this will translate to sexual feelings, experiences and relationships in the future.

It is also important when planning hormone treatment and surgery because sexual functioning needs to be considered from the outset. Therefore this needs to be explored as early as possible so that the best results can be achieved during transition and with the surgical procedures.
