The Transgender Community

The Transgender Community is growing, largely helped by the increasing number of online resources, social networking sites and the coordinated efforts of transsexuals in their local communities.

In the past, transsexuals have often felt isolated and marginalised in society but this is no longer the case. Individuals now have a number of different choices and can get involved in a host of different ways. Some people choose to attend local groups and social events, perhaps get involved in national projects or chat online to like-minded people all across the world from the comfort of their own homes.

Local Groups

The transgender community host informal, ad-hoc social groups across the country on a regular basis, where transsexuals can meet and socialise together. These are normally arranged in larger cities and attract individuals from a wide area. These groups provide an opportunity for people to share their experiences, support each other and increase their confidence in social situations. For many people, finding out when and where these groups are held can be a challenge, particularly if the individual feels isolated from other transsexuals. The internet is a wonderful resource (see below) and provides the perfect forum for sharing and advertising local groups and events.

National Organisations

The Gender Trust and the Beaumont Trust are two examples of national, charitable organizations set up to support the transgender community. The FTM Network is an informal, self-help group for female-to-male transsexuals with links both nationally and across the world. These organizations host local events, attract members from all over the UK and wider world and play an important role in keeping the transgender communities connected.

Magazines and Publications

There are a number of different magazines and publications supporting the transgender community. These vary in size and range from international glossy magazines, such as Transformation Magazine (which supports the cross-dressing and transgender community) and smaller publications written by transsexuals and packed full of important articles and information such as Boys Own, produced by the FTM Network.

Online Social Networking

For many people, taking the plunge and attending local groups is too big of a step. With the diverse range of social networking websites, people are now able to chat and interact with people online, in the safety of their own homes. Creating a profile on websites such as Facebook or MySpace are an excellent way to meet other transsexuals, search for people in the local area and advertise local events or groups. This website has Facebook profile under the name My Gender. Why not create your own profile and add us as a friend?

Web Video Resouces

Video messages and short documentaries provide an excellent insight into the transgender world. You Tube, and similar sites, have become enormously influential and provide an almost limitless range of interesting images, videos and means of communication. Through their search engines, individuals can listen and interact with millions of others, comment and discuss on important issues and post their own videos.
